By bike
The natural beauty and diversity of the Baltic Sea and of the inland can not be better explored in the Ostholstein district than with your own bicycle or e-bike. The region offers optimal conditions for daytime cyclists and bike tourists as well as for racing bike enthusiasts.
Around 1,400 kilometres of bike paths are currently signposted by a uniform system and marked with different route courses. In addition to 3 long-distance cycle routes, 32 themed routes guide you along the most beautiful routes in Ostholstein. All the routes shown here are identified by corresponding route logos on the destination signposts of the cycle paths and are therefore effortless to follow.
Quality assurance of the cycle path signposts
As a central coordination and contact point for bicycle tourism, we are responsible for ensuring the quality of the network of bicycle signposts in the Ostholstein district. In line with the national standard, the closed network of bicycle paths and the systematic plain text signposting ensure high-quality bicycle signposting. With a network density of 1 km per 1 km2, there are around 2,400 signpost locations in the area.
For quality assurance, the external planning office Lebensraum Zukunft from Kiel takes over the regular maintenance of the route network. Once a year, the complete cycle path signposting of the north and south district is driven on and checked. Should damages occur over time, two additional maintenance dates in the summer months are available since 2020. All sign locations and corresponding data are recorded in a digital sign register and can be independently managed and used by the respective contact persons of the municipalities. Financing is provided by a cooperation of all municipalities and cities in the Ostholstein district.
Please feel free to contact us if you notice any deficiencies in the cycle path signage or if we can help you with any other concerns regarding the quality assurance system.
